Art in Munich: Top 10 Art Houses & Galleries

The former city villa of Franz von Lenbach is perhaps the most famous gallery in the city of Munich. It houses the largest art collection of the Blauer Reiter editorial group. Exhibits include Wassily Kadinsky’s Impressions III and IV, Franz Marc’s Blaues Pferd I, Paul Klee’s Stadt R, and August Macke’s Zoologischer Garten I.

This still quite young but already established museum in Theresienstraße, with 3,200 square metres of exhibition space, presents 700 works by contemporary artists such as Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Pablo Picasso or Damien Hirst. In addition to the collection of Anette and Udo Brandhorst, changing exhibitions are presented here, in the middle of Munich’s Kunstareal.

Lovers of classical art will get their money’s worth in the Alte and Neue Pinakothek. Paintings by Dürer, Rembrandt and Da Vinci, Klimt, Van Gogh and Monet await visitors here. The Pinakothek der Moderne shows contemporary art, including works by Dalí and Picasso.

The Villa Stuck, built in 1899, was once the studio and living quarters of the Munich painter Franz von Stuck. In 1992, the magnificent building in Haidhausen became a museum that shows paintings and sculptures by the artist in a permanent exhibition.

LUMAS is a gallery on Brienner Straße that stands out for its innovative depiction of art in Munich. Since 2005, it has been a marketplace for affordable art. This means that important works by great artists are offered in high-quality photographic art. Among other things, the gallery cooperates with archives that manage works by deceased artists. As a result, many an otherwise hard-to-acquire work of art can be found at LUMAS.

If you are a fan of urban and experimental art, you will love the Kunstlabor. A highly interesting art project was created here a few years ago on an impressive 5,000 square meters. Local and international artists use the individual rooms of the complex for their so-called “spatial experiments”. There are really no limits, conventions are broken and expectations are played with.

Founded in 1980 under the former name “Künstlerwerkstatt”, the Kunsthaus at Lothringer Straße 13 belongs to the cultural department of the state capital. Here, changing curators present stimulating exhibitions of up-and-coming artists from near and far on 700 square metres.
